and the puppet government of Seyss-Inquart proclaimed the union of the country

The event was welcomed by an enthusiastic declaration of Vienna’s archbishop,

sweep the Fuehrer to legal dictatorship while neutralizing the potential of
Germany’s 23 million [Ed.: Roman] Catholics (34 million after the
Anschluss [Ed.: the annexation of Austria by Germany in March of 1938])
